Things to Do in Soroca

Soroca's Roma families built mansions with gold domes and turrets that look like Disney castles crossed with Orthodox churches. This small Moldovan city of ~35,000 sits along the Dniester River, where a well preserved 1499 fortress anchors one end of town while these elaborate palaces crown the hills at the other. The contrast is jarring and memorable. The city punches above its weight for historical significance. You'll find Soviet apartment blocks mixed with traditional Moldovan houses, but those architectural extremes—medieval stone and contemporary excess—make Soroca worth the trip. The Dniester River provides pleasant backdrop, and on clear days the fortress walls offer impressive views across the water into Ukraine.

Family-run restaurants serve hearty mici (grilled meat rolls), placinta (savory pastries), and excellent local wines. Places near the fortress cater to visitors while residential area restaurants offer more authentic local experiences—a full meal with wine typically costs 150-250 lei. Don't miss the local honey. It has a reputation throughout Moldova.

May through September offers warmest weather and longest days, ideal for outdoor walking and hilltop views. July and August can be quite hot, so spring and early fall might be more comfortable for extensive exploration of the fortress walls and palace neighborhoods. Winter visits are possible—the fortress looks dramatic in snow—but some outdoor attractions may have limited access.
